River Red Gum tree, Marrakech, Morocco. Found in the Place des Ferblantiers just outside the busy medina and adjacent the mythical El Badi palace. The tree is surprisingly large and mature given its location in such a well-travelled part of the city. Over its life it has witnessed an evolution of the square from home to the Saadian dynasty’s renowned tinsmiths to the place where cellphone suppliers jostle with rug traders. It appears to be well cared for by local merchants. Will it survive another century? Friends in Morocco tell us that the once packed-with-people medina is all but deserted in a post-covid19 world.
