The old world is dying, and the new world struggles to be born; now is the time of monsters
Towering above the skyline just west of Woodside, CA, is a massive old-growth Coastal Redwood (sequoia sempervirens). Its name is “Methuselah” and it is the oldest, more than 1,800 years, and largest living tree in the Santa Cruz Mountains. When the tree sprouted the Ohlone tribe were stewards of the surrounding forest. Fire engulfed the area in 2020. It is not known to us if this tree survived. Being in the shadow of this giant offers a rare glimpse into the past even as cars go by on their way to one of the world’s busiest technology centres. Contrast is everything.
