This plane tree is located at the corner of Wood Street and Cheapside in London. No one knows how long it has grown on that spot—once the old churchyard of St. Peter’s destroyed during the Great Fire of 1666. It has been a subject of local legend for centuries, and Wordsworth’s poem “Poor Susan” mentions it. Like other old trees in modern cities, this one hangs on to life with surprising determination even though it has no neighbours to help sustain it. How long will it survive?
